Beyond Time: A Curated Walkthrough Modern and Contemporary Art
Tuesday, Apr 15, 7:00 PM
Our upcoming auction, Beyond Time, offers a captivating journey through modern and contemporary Romanian art, showcasing masterpieces spanning from the late 19th century to the present day.
This carefully curated selection highlights the early 20th century in Romanian art, featuring artists such as Nicolae Tonitza and Iosif Iser, and traces its evolution through to contemporary figures like Marian Zidaru, Mircea Roman, Ștefan Câlția, Roman Tolici, and Gili Mocanu.
One of the highlights, Le Réverbère by Nicolae Tonitza, showcases his mastery of capturing the picturesque. With vibrant colours and carefully chosen lighting, the piece evokes the warmth of summer on the Silver Coast.
Kimon Loghi’s Nymph offers a beautifully symbolic, ethereal work rooted in the spirit of Symbolism, while Jacques Hérold’s Le coup de foudre (1948) plays with the effects of love at first sight, rendered in his characteristic playful style.
The auction also features notable works by Camil Ressu, Nicolae Dărăscu, Francisc Șirato, and a stunning abstract piece by Anca Mureșan. The artwork Depiction 8 (2006) from the “Gospel of Santa Claus” series by Roman Tolici stands as a stark commentary on the commercialisation of sacred symbols in contemporary society, while Mircea Roman’s Person behind Bars presents a poignant wood sculpture that touches on the complexities of human identity.
The auction includes dynamic pieces by contemporary artists, such as the sculptures The Spiral and Trophy (1980) by Peter Jecza or Person behind Bars (1999) by Mircea Roman and powerful works by women artists like Rodica Maniu Mützner, Mimi-Șaraga Maxy, Lena Constante, and Magdalena Rădulescu. The abstract works of Vasile Dobrian, Roman Cotoșman, Alexandru Țipoia, Ion Mirea and Dinu Săvescu also present a fresh, contemporary perspective.
