The EES was established by Amelia Edwards and Reginald Stuart Poole in 1882 with the primary objective of exploring, surveying, and excavating in Egypt. Axel Guttmann was a well-known private collector of European weapons. His collection began with a Roman Bronze helmet and grew rapidly to over 1,000 pieces. Known for lending his collections for exhibitions and providing accessibility to researchers, Guttmann's collection was auctioned following his passing in 2002 and 2004.
