GANDHARAN SCHIST SEATED BODHISATTVA MAITREYA
Ca. AD 200.
A seated Bodhisattva Maitreya crafted from schist stone. This seated figure is positioned atop a plinth framed by columns that flank a relief scene featuring votive figures. The Bodhisattva projects a tranquil expression with his gaze fixed in the distance, conveying a profound sense of inner peace. Adorned in an elegant sanghati robe, the Bodhisattva wears an intricate headdress, complemented by beaded necklaces, armbands, and bracelets. The figured is backed with a halo and seated in the Dhyana Mudra position, a hand gesture symbolizing meditation. His hands rest in the lap with palms facing upward, the right hand atop the left. The item is mounted on a custom-made stand.

In Buddhist tradition, the Bodhisattva Maitreya is an enlightened being who compassionately refrains from entering Nirvana, choosing instead to guide others towards enlightenment.

Provenance: From the collection of a London gentleman; formerly acquired on the Belgium art market in the 1960s. This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.
