Henry Charles Seppings Wright "Stuff" (1850–1937) – "Queer Hardie" – Vanity Fair Lithograph (1894)
This original chromolithograph titled "Queer Hardie" was published as a supplement to Vanity Fair on July 5, 1894. The caricature depicts James Keir Hardie (1856-1915), the influential British socialist and founder of the Labour Party, known for his advocacy of workers' rights and his defiance of upper-class conventions. He is portrayed here in his characteristic informal attire, pipe in mouth, with a calm but assertive posture. The artwork was created by Henry Charles Seppings Wright, who signed his works under the pseudonym "Stuff". As one of Vanity Fair’s contributing artists, he captured the personalities of public figures with subtle wit and refined draughtsmanship. The print was produced by the esteemed lithographers Vincent Brooks, Day & Son.This plate is part of the legendary Vanity Fair series of caricatures (1868-1914), which became both a satirical and historical record of notable figures of British society.Artist or Maker: Henry Charles Seppings Wright "Stuff" (1850-1937)J.
