Travelers photographs, guided by the pioneer tour guides in Eretz Israel - Azriel Broshi

Seven photographs of travelers in Eretz Israel, under the guidance of the pioneer of Jewish  tours in Eretz Israel, a member of the "Palestine Wanderers Association", Azriel Broshi. Various sites in the Land of Israel, Shvat 1928.

The photos show groups of travelers in Jordan, Old Jericho, Allenby Bridge, Dead Sea, Ein Elisha and more. The photographs are described: "Trip ... under the direction of A. Broshi, Shvat 1928".

Azriel Broshi (Barstowitzky) [1897-1986] Born in Liskova, in the Volkowisk district of Poland, immigrated to Israel in 1920 with a group of friends from his city. An Israeli educator and a knowledge man of the land, pioneers of the field of travel culture and the knowledge of the area in Israel and its surroundings. For many years, he headed the Section for Excursions of the Center for Culture and Education of the Workers' Union.

In the 1920s, the Histadrut initiated the appointment of "wandering teachers", whose role was to guide and familiarize the landscapes of Eretz Yisrael and its sites to the residents of the country. Azriel Broshi was among the leaders of those teachers. In the late 1920s, the activities of wandering teachers ceased. At that time, in November 1927, a group of lovers of the knowledge of the land was organized and founded the "Palestine Wanderers Association". Among her prominent friends was Broshi. Along with his "roaming" colleagues, has been hiking the length and breadth of the Land of Israel, as well as in the past Jordan, Syria, Lebanon and Egypt. Some of the trips were used as camouflage for the "Hagganah" to conduct tours and observation. The events of 1936-1939 led to the cessation of activity of the National Wanderers Association, but in Tel Aviv and Haifa there continued to be hotspots of activity until the early 1950s. Wanderings tours were characterized by a combination of walking and exploring the sites in all aspects. Azriel Broshi continued to operate within the Histadrut, serving as the organization's "tour and trip" secretary and coordinating the activities of the country's knowledge tours, especially after the establishment of the state. Broshi published his impressions and stories of his travels in the book "In the Way I Walked."
