First edition. Luís de Magalhães was a personal friend of Eça de Queirós. The latter frequented his house and describes it as Quinta de Refaldes in Fradique Mendes' Letter XII of Correspondence. About this work Gaspar Simões says: “O Brasileiro Soares stands out for his beautiful writing and one that another novelty at the time, such as those rudiments of psychological truth, which allow him to give us a beautiful portrait of the hero: Joaquim Soares, the Brazilian Soares ” (cit. from Dic. EQ, p. 383). Luís de Magalhães was also responsible for publishing several posthumous works by Eça de Queirós. Rare.
