Rare WWII public announcement broadside, 14 x 22 inches, issued by the Western Defense Command and Fourth Army Wartime Civil Control Administration, Presidio of San Francisco, California. About 120,000 people of Japanese ancestry, most of whom lived on the Pacific Coast, were forcibly relocated and incarcerated in concentration camps in the western interior of the country. Approximately two-thirds of the internees were United States citizens. These actions were ordered by President Franklin D. Roosevelt shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor. 1) Pursuant to the provisions of Public Proclamations Nos. 1 and 2...dated March 2, 1942...it is hereby ordered that...all persons of Japanese ancestry, both alien and non-alien, be excluded from that portion of Military Area 1...'
