A RUSSIAN GILT-SILVER SPOON WITH NIELLO DEPICTION OF SUKHAREV TOWER, 1888
A beautiful gilt-silver spoon with a niello depiction of the famed Sukharev Tower. The Sukharev Tower, known to locals as 'The bride of the Ivan Velikiy', was commissioned by Tsar Peter I in 1689 and completed in 1695, remaining an important social space and iconic feature of Moscow's skyline for 239 years before it was ultimately demolished on the orders of Lazar Kaganovich, Secretary of the Moscow City Committee, who claimed that the tower "blocked traffic".
The spoon is stamped with various marks including the maker's mark of Ivan Khlebnikov, the 'AA 1888' Assayer mark, the Russian 84 Silver Standard mark, the Imperial Eagle, and St. George representing Moscow.
Moscow, Russia, 1888.
