BHUTTO BENAZIR: (1953-2007) Pakistani Politician who served as Prime Minister of Pakistan 1988-90 & 1993-96. Assassinated. Bhutto was the first woman to head a democratic government in a country with Muslim majority. She is widely regarded as an icon for women´s rights due to her political success in a male-dominated society. Bhutto was assassinated following the tragic deaths of other members of the family. Benazir Bhutto´s father, Zulfikar Bhutto (1928-1979), also served as Prime Minister of Pakistan 1973-77, and before that as President of Pakistan 1971-73. During his mandate as Prime Minister, he was arrested after a military coup in July 1977. He was imprisoned and sentenced to death, and after a long trial, he was executed by hanging.  Benazir Bhutto´s brother, Murtaza Bhutto (1954-1996) was also assassinated, shot on a police encounter.
