L´ AMORE: COCTEAU, MAGNANI & ROSSELLINI

L´AMORE: A good vintage signed and inscribed 9 x 7 photograph by Jean Cocteau (1889-1963) French poet, playwright, novelist, artist, filmmaker and critic, Anna Magnani (1908-1973) Italian actress, Academy Award winner, and Roberto Rossellini (1906-1977) Italian film director individually, the image depicting them walking outdoors in full-length poses, arm-in-arm, accompanied by another lady who holds two dogs on their leads, at the time of the premiere of the Italian drama anthology film L´Amore at the Venice Film Festival in August 1948. Signed by Cocteau, Magnani and Rossellini in black fountain pen inks to clear areas of the image, Cocteau and Magnani adding inscriptions and the former also adding the place and date, Venice 1948, in his hand, and Rossellini signing with his name alone. A rare grouping of signatures. Some very light, extremely minor surface creasing and a few small traces of former mounting to the corners of the verso, about VG

Provenance: The present photograph was signed for Carlo Giovetti (1916-1999) Italian journalist in the film and entertainment sector who worked for various newspapers including Il Giorno.

L´Amore (1948) starred Anna Magnani and was directed by Roberto Rossellini. The film consists of two parts, the first being The Human Voice, which was based on Jean Cocteau´s 1929 play of the same title. Magnani had previously performed the same role in a stage production of Cocteau´s work in 1942.
