Sefer Kav HaYashar in Ladino—rare edition, Istanbul 1863.

A old and foundational work, mussar based on pshat and melitza “for the benefit of the soul and body…with 102 chapters” (“kav”). By Rabbi Zvi Hirsch ben Rabbi Aharon Shmuel Kaidanover, Av Beit Din of Frankfurt-am-Mein and Krakow. The work is completely translated into Ladino. [1], 179 leaves.

Some bibliographic entries list the year of printing as 1857, because of a calculation based on a detail on the title page, but close analysis reveals the addition of a word “b’otyotav” so that another 6 years is added (the number of letters in the words Kav HaYashar) resulting in 1863 as the year of printing. Regardless, this is a rare edition not found in most libraries—where it is held, it is catalogued in the rare books section (such as in the National Library).

Approbations from Istanbul rabbis. Detached binding, almost no spine left, a few detached leaves, overall good condition.

The blank first leaf has a long note in pencil, seems to be in Ladino.
