In 1806, the merchant Alexander Popov built a porcelain factory in the village of Gorbunovo near Moscow. The products of this factory deserve special attention. Production began with simple dishes for taverns and inns (hence its name "tavern"). Later they also began to make empire-style coffee and tea sets, richly decorated and gilded. Popov invented two new colored enamels: chestnut brown and brilliant blue. However, figurines produced in 1840-1860 brought the greatest fame to the Popov factory. and depicting folk types. The realism of these figures has no equal in any of the previous factories, although their prototypes were nameless serfs who worked for Popov: - an old spinner, a peasant weaving bast shoes, a chariot driver making a wheel, a peasant drinking water scooped from a tub - all these are people taken during the performance of their ordinary everyday affairs, natural in gestures and without a theatrical pose. Unknown artists have created small masterpieces worthy of admiration. Popov had another factory in Tambov. At the end of its activity, the Popov factory struggled with the competition of new, better equipped enterprises. In 1872, this factory was liquidated.
