Especially known for his snowy Kansas landscapes, Peterson was born on September 22, 1919 at Fremont, Kansas and died June 1, 2009 in Lindsborg Kansas.

Carl graduated from Lindsborg High School and studied art at Bethany College under the teaching of Swedish-American artist Birger Sandzen. He graduated in 1942 with a BFA. He received a MFA from the University of Colorado, Boulder. He also spent a summer studying at Columbia University, NY.

He taught art in public schools in Osborne, KS; Hays, KS and Salina, KS. He taught art classes at Bethany College, Lindsborg, KS. In 1963 he became the co-director of the Birger Sandzen Memorial Gallery.

Carl's primary media was watercolor painting, although an occasional oil and casein painting will appear. While at Colorado University he studied lithography. A few of those examples still survive. Carl was a fairly prolific painter, especially after his retirement from the gallery in 1981.
