De Xing Cheng Chinese Cloisonne Vase w/ Dragon
Late Qing or early Republic Chinese cloisonne vase marked De Xing Cheng (Teh Hsing Ch'eng) along the underside. Enameled throughout with yellow and white lotus flowers among blue scrollwork against a pink ground. With a bulbous body with a long, tapered, garlic mouth neck. A gilt dragon winds from the body around the neck towards the mouth of the vase.

De Xing Cheng, founded in 1874, was arguably the oldest and one of the best cloisonne workshops in Peking. An apocryphal tale tells of the founder rediscovering the cloisonne enamel process after buying a few pieces of enamel from an old woman before secluding himself in his workshop and later founding the workshop.

Height: 11 1/4 in x diameter: 6 1/4 in.
Condition: The vase is in generally good condition; no major chips, cracks, or visible losses. The color is bold and bright. There are three minute enamel losses just below the rim; above it, there is a 1/2 inch long dent. There is one dent along the body of the vase with possible discolored wax infilling, visible in the lot listing. There is light oxidation along the dragon; along the body of the dragon, there is crazing to the gilt. There is a drilled hole to one of the paws of the dragon, original to the artistic process. Along the underside, wear throughout, consistent with age and use.
