Egyptian Maspero Brothers Cigarette company Jewish merchant Judaica token, 1930s
Egypt: Maspero Brothers Cigarette company bronze token, circa. 1930s; not maker-marked; size: 22.75mm; weight: 4.55g. Obverse: stylized face set against the sun(?); French legend "Maspero Freres Ltd • Caire - Egypte". Reverse: oval eye-like device; French title above & below "Cigarettes Egyptiennes". In VF-EF: even on better grade examples, the bottom stroke of oval device on reverse is unclear (from weak die strike). Founded in Egypt by Italian Jews; retained a storage facility in Jaffo, 1911-1914; began operations in Palestine, 1921; a subsidiary of "British American Tobacco" co.; closed in 1956 & sold brands to the Israeli " Dubek" company.
