The letter before us was sent by Rabbi Kook on 16th June 1914 to his colleague Rabbi Ben Zion Meir Chai Uziel. The letter deals with a woman whose husband died and according to the halacha she requires chalitza from her husband's brother, and to say a certain liturgy at the time of the chalitza. However, there is a problem, as she is almost completely mute, and it will be very difficult to cause her to say what has to be said. An additional problem is that the woman does not speak Hebrew, and the liturgy has to be said in Hebrew.
Rabbi Kook wrote the letter in Sephardic script, as he customarily wrote to Rabbi Uziel and to other Sephardic rabbis.
In his eulogy on Rabbi Kook, Rabbi Uziel related: "when I was called in 1911 to serve as the rabbi of Jaffa I was drawn to him through love, admiration and esteem. I received guidance from him, not just in matters of halacha, but also in other matters".
Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak HaCohen Kook (1865-1935) immigrated to Israel in 1904 and served as rabbi of Jaffa and the agricultural settlements. At the end of 1914 he traveled abroad, where he remained until 1919, and afterwards was appointed as rabbi of Jerusalem. In 1921 he established the Israeli Chief Rabbinate, and served as the Chief Rabbi of Israel.
Rabbi Ben Zion Meir Chai Uziel (1880-1953) was one of the greatest Sephardi halachic rulers of the previous generation. From 1911 he served as the "Chacham Bashi" (Sephardi Chief Rabbi who is recognized by the authorities) in Jaffa. In 1939 he was appointed as the Rishon L'Zion - the Sephardi Chief Rabbi.
Condition: Good. The paper is cut a bit at the bottom, with no damage to the text. Filing holes and small tears, almost without damage to text.
