[14th to 20th JULY 1789]: An excellent A.L.S., Le Paige Bar, three pages, 8vo, n.p., 20th July 1789, to Charles-Pierre Le Paige de Sarnois, in French. Le Paige reports on the riots and events occurred over the last week in Paris, from 14th to 20th July 1789, and states in part `..maybe we were more alarmed than what the real dangers were…and it wasn´t until we saw the order returning together with the Parisian militia that I started breathing and expecting..the number of people in the regiment wishing the change was huge..´ further saying `..I do not complain any of the two victims, Messieurs de Launay and de Flesselles who were guilty of treason, but I am really annoyed because those who are in fact more guilty, those who gave wrong advice to the King, urging him to take violent replies, those who taunted the crowd of 400 thousand inhabitants of Paris,..have not been punished for having corrupted the will of a good but weak King..´ Le Paige further refers to the Parisian blaming French guards, although in his opinion `..it´s only because of their attitude and only thanks to them that we are here and happy after all happened. Their decision could have been heroic or despicable..their success makes them famed..The King has been right joining his Nation…´ further again referring to the Parisian reactions `..they were supposed to seize properties, to dethrone the King; but instead we watched the people leaving their fury aside when they saw and acclaimed their master, wishing him the best..´ Le Paige concludes with questions about the French Guards decisions. Bearing a red wax seal in fine condition showing the family coat of arms to the address leaf. A lengthy letter of interesting historical content. VG £1000-1500 Charles-Pierre Le Paige de Sanois (?-1801) Parisian Jurist. Jacques de Flesselles (1730-1789) Last Provost of the merchants of Paris. Assassinated on the steps of the City Hall and decapitated on 14th July 1789. On 14th July 1789 six French Guards companies were present in Paris, and five of them joined the crowds and participated in the storming of the Bastille.
