"Hebrew Woman!" – Broadside for the Elections for the First Assembly of Representatives, 1920 – Issued by the Party of Hebrew Women in Palestine
"Hebrew Woman!", broadside issued by the "Union of Hebrew Women for Equal Rights in Palestine". Jerusalem: Kahana press, [ca. 1920].
In April 1920, elections for the Assembly of Representatives took place for the first time. The most difficult issue accompanying these elections was women's right to vote, after which the first feminist party in the country was established: the "Union of Hebrew Women for Equal Rights in Palestine". The party won 5 seats in the Assembly, led to equal legislation and turned the leadership of the Yishuv into one of the first parliaments in the world to acknowledge the right of women to vote.
Before us is an elections broadside issued by the party, bearing a combative message to the women of the country: "Hebrew Woman! You have the right to vote for the Assembly of Representatives. It is your duty to exercise this right for your own good and for the good of the entire Yishuv. Go to the polling station and vote for women […] who will protect you, if not you yourself!" (Hebrew).
An interesting handwritten text on verso documents a meeting of an unidentified person with the attorney general of the Mandate government, Norman Bentwich.
[1] leaf, approx. 23 cm. Good condition. Filing holes and minor blemishes. A postage stamp on bottom.
