Seder Chamisha Ta'aniyot. Amsterdam [1726]

Exceptional copy containing the rare engraving depicting the destruction of Jerusalem, in an original gold-tooled leather binding made by an important master binder active in Amsterdam. Some 30 binding are known from his hand.


Seder Chamisha Ta'aniyot, the custom of the Sephardic community. Amsterdam, [1726]. 

Includes the Shacharit prayer and prayers for Tosh BeAv. On leaves 11-115: the Haftarah for Tisha BeAv with a Ladino translation, verse by verse. The Press of Yitzchak ben Shlomo Raphael Yehuda Leon Templo. 


The book contains an illustrated frontispiece, with an illustration depicting the destruction of the Jerusalem with the notation: Zecher Lachurban (in commemoration of the destruction) and beneath it, an illustration of the built Temple and the notation Mikdash Adonia Konenu Yadecha (the Mikdash of Adonai, which your hands have established). In many copies, this frontispiece and all the leaves at the beginning of the book are missing. 


The book's luxurious leather, gold-tooled binding was created by a master binder who worked in and around Amsterdam, 1705-1741. Nearly 30 luxury and presentation bindings are known from his exceptionally talented hand. His bindery has been deemed the Konstboeken-binderij ("Arts Books Bindery") on account of the five bindings he is known to have created for special art books.
