ג'וני פרידלנדר נולד בשנת 1912 בעיירה באזור שלזיה שאז הייתה בתחומי האימפריה הגרמנית. בשנת 1922 הוא סיים את לימודיו בברסלאו והחל ללמוד אמנות אצל אוטו מילר. בשנת 1930, לאחר סיום הלימודים הוא עבר לדרזדן. בשנת 1933 הוא עבר לברלין וביקר בפריז. ג'וני פרידלנדר התקרב לדעות קומוניסטיות, נעצר ונשלח לשנתיים למחנה ריכוז. לאחר שחרורו הוא עבר לצ'כוסלובקיה. בשנת 1937 הוא עבר לפריז. במהלך מלחמת העולם השנייה הוא נעצר שוב, תחילה על ידי הצרפתים ואחר כך על ידי הנאצים. בשנת 1944 הוא שוחרר וחזר לצחום התצריב בטכניקת אקווטינטה.
