Anania's L’Universale fabrica del mondo - Volume with 5 Engraved Maps
This early atlas is Giovanni Lorenzo d'Anania's L’Universale fabrica del mondo. The work was published in Venice in 1582 by Andrea Muschio for Aniello San Vito, di Napoli.
This is the only edition of Anania's work to include a map of the world. The plate was first published in Girolamo Ruscelli's 1561 Geografia. The other four maps of the continent are believed to be done by Girolamo Porro.
There are 230 leaves to the volume including 5 full sheet engraved maps bound at the end. The maps are of the world [Orbis Descriptio], Europa, America, Africa, and Asia. There is a depiction of a woodcut printer's device to the title page. It is bound in contemporary French cat's paw calf, covers with gilt French fillet border, marbled endpapers, plain edges. It has been expertly rebacked to style.
Paper Size: ~ 8 5/8" by 6 1/4"
Paper Type or Special Features: Volume with 5 Engraved Maps
The work is in good to very good condition overall. The title page is lightly soiled and worn with repair at the margins. Some of the lower and upper fore-edge corners of the binding are a bit worn with minor loss and repair. There is some marginal soiling and short closed tears outside plate marks to the maps. There is some scattered browning throughout. There may be a few minor imperfections or faint marks to be expected with age. Please review the image carefully for condition and contact us with any questions.
