Hungary. Letter from Rabbi Zvi Hirsch Goitein, Av Beis Din of Hőgyész, to His Father, Author of Kesef Nivchar (1840)
Letter written and signed by Rabbi Zvi Hirsch Goitein av”d Hőgyész author of
Yidei Moshe, sent to his father Rabbi Baruch Bendet Goiten, author of
Kesef Nivchar.
In the letter, the son begs his father not to accept the rabbinical position offered to him and instead suggests that he try in the city of Paks.
The top half of the letter features a letter from Rabbi Zenvil Rosenberg av’d Szenc (brother-in-law of Rabbi Eliyahu Teller, father-in-law of Rabbi Zvi Hirsch).
Rabbi Zvi Hirsch Goiten av”d Hidjess (1802-1859) was a disciple of Rabbi Zvi Hirsch Charif and he corresponded with the Maharam Ash and other Hungarian Torah giants. In 1842, he took over his father’s position in Hidjess. He authored the
Yidei Moshe on the 613 mitzvot (Paks, 1904), and his correspondence, both letters he wrote and those sent to him, is included in Zikhron Avot, where this letter appears as Siman 28.
