Poland and Galicia. Letter from the av"d of Plotsk, Rav Mordechai Dov Eidelberg Hy"d, author of Chazon L'Moed.

Letter written and signed by Rav Mordechai Dov Eidelberg av"d Plotsk to the Chief Rabbinate in Tel Aviv. Shevat, 1939.
The reverse bears a letter written and signed by the dayan, Rav Pinchas of Plotsk.

Rav Mordechai Dov Eidelberg [1881-1942] served in the rabbinate of a number of cities, including Liškiava and Maków. In 1928, he was appointed rav of Plotsk, Poland, but his activities and influence weren't limited to his immediate surroundings. He was in strong contact with Torah leaders throughout Lithuania and Poland and was activtely involved in fortifying religious boundaries.
He was famed for his work Chazon L'Moed, which includes practical answers to halachic questions relating to that particular era. The book therefore documents the situation of Russian Jewry at the time. When the war broke out, he wandered through many cities until he reached Lechowitz. In Cheshvan 1942 he was murdered by the Nazis together with hundreds of other Jews of the city.

Shevat, 1939.
