בהקדמה כותב המחבר שדבריו מיוסדים על רבינו בחיי חזקוני כלי יקר ואור החיים.
המחבר רבי צבי הירש פיליפ, (ת"ר – תרע"ה) נכד הב"ח ור"ש אוסטרפולי, לצד גדלותו בתורה היה גם יש עסקים נודע ובעל חסד עצום. כפי הנכתב בשערי הספרים שלפנינו הוא מכר את הספרים בזול, וההכנסות ניתנו לתמיכת עניים מהוגנים שבעיר.
