הספר נסוב אודות חייו של רבי נחמן, הנהגותיו ושבח מעלותיו. הספר מתאר את חייו של רבי נחמן, מימי ילדותו, ואדמו"רותו שהחלה בגיל 13, ובעיקר את מסעו לארץ ישראל בזמן מלחמת נפוליאון. תוכנו של רוב הספר הוא נסיעתו לארץ ישראל.
