מרן הגאון רבי אלעזר מנחם מן שך - [תרנ"ט-תשס"ב], ראש ישיבת פוניבז' ונשיא מועצת גדולי התורה של אגודת ישראל ולאחר מכן של דגל התורה. משנות ה-70 הנהיג את הציבור החרדי ליטאי במדינת ישראל, אשר ראה בו את "גדול הדור".
הרב שך היה חניך ישיבות ליטא בתקופה שלפני מלחמת העולם הראשונה ובמהלכה. בגיל 23 התמנה לראשונה כר"מ, ומאז לימד תורה במשך כשבעים וחמש שנה, בישיבות בליטא ובישראל. פריצתו לקדמת ההנהגה התורנית והציבורית החלה בשנות ה-60. במשך כשלושה עשורים הוא נחשב הסמכות הרוחנית והציבורית העליונה בציבור החרדי-הליטאי. הוא העצים את חשיבותן של "דעת התורה" וההשקפה התורנית בתודעת הציבור החרדי. יזם הקמתן של ישיבות רבות בישראל ושימש נשיאן ופטרונן. במקביל גיבש את הציבור הליטאי כקבוצה. ייסד את מפלגת דגל התורה, את העיתון "יתד נאמן" ועוד.
