Sefer HaChinuch. Venice, 1600. Different Division for Parashat Mishpatim!

Sefer HaChinuch - written long ago by Ish Levi Barceloni. Di Gara Press, Venice, 1600. Leaves 6-7 and the index leaves bear handwritten glosses in Italian from the period of printing.

This is the second edition of Sefer HaChinuch - one of the most important fundamental books of Jewish literature. Complete revised edition with a foreword by Rabbi Yehudah Aryeh of Modena. The proofreader writes that he had a previous edition in his possession (the first; Venice, 1523) as well as the manuscript, and he compared the texts.

This antique edition bears a remnant of an ancient custom that is not currently practiced at all. In the past, there was a custom that the Torah portion of Mishpatim was divided in two, the first from v'eleh hamishpatim through im kessef tilveh etc, and the second from im kessef tilveh until the end of the portion. This book enumerates the mitzvahs according to this division.

228 leaves, 20 cm.

Fine condition: Aging stains. Professional restoration to the margins of the title page and the margins of several additional leaves. Elegant new leather binding and marbleized paper.
