Tractate Ketubot. Salonica. Press of Avraham ben Yedidya Gabbai, [1707].
Dr. Yisrael Mehlman reviewed the Salonica edition of the Talmud in his essay "Perakim L'Toldot HaDefus B'Saloniki" which was published in his "Genuzot Sefarim. He notes that, "Salonica gemaras are very rare. Some were lost because they were so well-used, and no remnants survive. A few copies were preserved, but they are hard to obtain…it seems that whatever was printed wasn't printed in large amounts…The Talmud in Salonica was printed for use by the Jews of Turkey, and specifically those in Salonica".
Here is Tractate Ketubot, missing the title page. A copy of the title page is featured on page 62 of Dr. Mehlman's essay. The page order does not follow traditional editions. It ends in the middle of the seventh chapter – like the copy in JTS.
124 leaves. 31 cm. These gemarot were made for Salonica Torah scholars. Some of these scholars left their marks with marginal notes and sketches. Some of the leaves are restored. Modern, half-leather binding. Artistic refurbishment of the blank margins. Fine condition.
Very rare. The National Library only has a few leaves from this gemara that were removed from ancient bindings.
