Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak HaKohen Kook (1865-1935) was the first Ashkenazic Chief Rabbi of Palestine. He was a halachic posek, kabalist and philosopher and one of the patriarchs of religious Zionism. He was a disciple of the Netziv of Volozhin, av"d Zaumel and Bausk and later in Yaffo and the colonies. After the First World War, he returned to Jerusalem from London where he served as Chief Rabbi of Palestine.
Rabbi Yechiel Michel Tukachinsky [1872-1955] was born in Lithuania, and immigrated to Palestine at the age of 8. He studied at the Eitz Chaim Yeshiva and married a great-granddaughter of Rabbi Shmuel Salant. He served as principal and head of "Eitz Chaim", was the initiator of the "Luach Eretz Yisrael" calendar and authored of many halachic works. His works include: "Gesher HaChaim" regarding mourning in halacha and hashkafa; "Sefer Eretz Yisrael", "Ir HaKodesh V'Hamikdash".
