Mechir Yayin by the Ram"a, Hamburg, 1711. Copy that was Previously Owned by the Kabbalist Rabbi Moshe Lipschutz and Rabbi Shlomo Yedidyah Singaliah

Sefer Mechir Yayin – commentary on Meggilat Esther. This book is the “first fruit” of the great Ashkenazic adjudicator, Rabbi Moshe Isserlis – the Ram”a. The Ram”a wrote this unique composition and dedicated it to his father in place of mishloach manot while he was in exile. Rare second edition. Hamburg, 1711.

This copy belonged to two rabbinic leaders of Modena one after another, the G-dly Kabbalist Rabbi Moshe Lipschutz, av beit din of Modena in the 18th century, who signs: "The youth Moshe Lipshutz." The next owner of this book was the gaon Shlomo Yedidyah Singaliah - one of the leading rabbis of Modena in the 19th century, and a dayan in the beit din of Rabbi Yishmael HaKohen of Modena, author of Zera Emet, who signs "Shlomo Yedidyah Singaliah."

When a plague broke out in Krakow, where the Ram”a lived, the Isserlis family was forced to wander to the town of Shidlov, and their economic situation did not allow for them to observe the mitzvah of mishloach manot. Instead of sending his father mishloach manot, which was not within his ability, the Ram”a wrote this composition and dedicated it to his father in place of mishloach manot. His intention in naming the book Mechir Yayin was that for the price of a bottle of wine which he should have sent his father, he is giving him this commentary to Megillat Esther. This second edition, like the first edition, was printed as a book in its own right. Later editions were printed as a commentary alongside the text of Megillat Esther.

Refer to the Hebrew catalog text for brief biographies of Rabbi Shlomo Yedidyah Singaliah of Modena and of the Kabbalist Rabbi Moshe Lipschutz.
