Beautiful and Interesting Letter Handwritten by the Admo"r Rabbi Yosef Meir Kahana of Spinka
"I want to come as a pioneer and fight the Torah's battle ... to take up weapons!"
Lengthy letter [2 pages] with important content. Entirely handwritten, signed and stamped [two types of stamps] by the Admo"r Rabbi Yosef Meir Kahana of Spinka, just after his ascent to the Land of Israel. Jerusalem, c. 1941.
The letter is addressed to the gaon Rabbi Shmuel Yitzchak Hillman, rabbi of London, father-in-law of the chief rabbi of Israel - Rabbi Yitzchak Isaac HaLevi Herzog, and rosh yeshivah of Ohel Torah in Rechavia, where all gedolei Eretz Yisrael studied. In his heart-rending letter to Rabbi Hillman, the Rebbe (quite literally) pleads that he formally accept him as a student in his kollel.
"My soul's request and prayer is laid out before you - to accept me into your lofty yeshivah ... I have found Torah, and I know [not] what I will eat from this point; the children are crying for food. My fate is in your hand; my household consists of eight people ..." The sacred rebbi mentions that Rabbi Hillman's son-in-law, the chief rabbi of Israel, Rabbi Yitzchak Isaac HaLevi Herzog, was the one who arranged his arrival in the Land, "And now" - writes the rebbe [paraphrasing Zionism] - "I want to come as a pioneer and fight the Torah's battle ... to take up weapons!"
