Or Zarua. First Edition. Copy that Belonged to the Arugot HaBosem, the Gaon Rabbi Moshe Greenwald of Chust
Sefer Or Zarua - fundamental halachic work including halachic rulings, Talmudic elucidations and responsa from early leading sages of Ashkenaz, by the Rishon, Rabbeinu Yitzchak b"r Moshe of Vienna, a disciple of the Ravi"ah, and rabbi of Mahara"m MiRottenberg. Parts III and IV. Jerusalem, 1888-1890. The title page bears personal stamps from the gaon Rabbi Moshe Greenwald, av beit din of Chust - one of the leading poskim of his generation.
The author of Arugot HaBosem's signature appears twice in the center of the title page: "Moshe Greenwald * av beit din of Chust and environs." The previous page has a notation from the post-Holocaust period by the purchaser of the sefer. Additional stamp: HaRav Hillel Meir Moshe Ehrengrober, son of Rabbi Elazar Mordechai, av beit din Vranov.
This is the first edition of one of the fundamental halachic sefarim by the Rishonim. This important work was lost, concealed for centuries, and printed for the first time according to an old parchment manuscript in Rabbi Akiva Lehrin's library in Amsterdam, and before that, in the library of R' Shaul Berlin, author of Besamim Rosh. The manuscript was on a boat that became submerged. The boat sank, but the manuscript miraculously survived.
Sefer Or Zarua is one of the most well-known halachic sefarim. It is cited continuously in later poskim, from the Rishonim through the latest Achronim. The Hagahot Ashr"i is mainly quoted from him. He concludes these quotations with the abbreviation 'מא"ז' (from Or Zarua). Another sefer that brings the Or Zarua on occasion is the Mordechai. From there, it is extensively quoted in the Beit Yosef, primarily the Darkei Moshe. From those, it is quoted and brought by the rest of the poskim. His opinion regarding hefsek taharah is well-known, known as "Onat Or Zarua."
