On the flyleaf, the handwritten signature of the Gaon Rabbi Netanel Berlin, Av Beit Din of Seltz, brother of the Netziv of Volozhin.
An inscription at the end of the book states: "Belongs to the esteemed rabbi, the great scholar, sharp and proficient, the distinguished sage, our teacher and master, Rabbi Netanel Berlin, Av Beit Din of this place, Seltz, near Brisk of Lithuania, on Sunday, Parashat Acharei, the year 5587 [תרבר"ך]."
Rabbi Netanel Berlin, son of Rabbi Yaakov and brother of the Netziv, served as the rabbi of Seltz and later in Mstislavl. He passed away at a young age on 7 Tevet 5632 [תרל"ב]. Listed in Otzar HaRabbanim, entry A16496. Additional biographical material is included.
