Rabbi Eliyahu Chaim Meisel was born on the 9th of Sivan, 1821, in Horodok. On the 14th of Sivan that same year, Rabbi Chaim passed away, and at the brit milah of Rabbi Meisel, which took place two days after Rabbi Chaim’s passing, the newborn was named after him and after his teacher, the Vilna Gaon. From childhood, he was recognized as a prodigy and a wonder child. Rabbi Leib of Kovno traveled specifically to his parents' home to see this exceptional child. By the age of eight, he was already a student of Rabbi Yitzchak of Volozhin.
From 1873, he served as the rabbi of Łódź for forty years. He was known as one of the greatest Torah scholars of his generation in Lithuania and Poland, renowned for his exceptional acts of charity, redeeming captives, and rescuing impoverished families from starvation. His grave in Łódź became a site for prayer and requests for salvation, always covered with petition notes (kvitlach).
