Sefer HaYashar Attributed to Rabbeinu Tam. Jerusalem, 1864. One of the First Books Printed in Jerusalem.

Sefer HaYashar – Ethical Reproofs from Rabbeinu Yaakov, Ba’al HaTosafot – Rabbeinu Tam. Jerusalem, printed by Yechiel Brill, Michael HaCohen, and Yoel Moshe ben HaRav Moshe. 1864. One of the earliest books printed at this press in Jerusalem.

At the beginning and end of the book, illustrations of the Temple Mount appear, as well as two images of the printing press in Jerusalem, accompanied by the inscription: "A new printing altar has been established in Zion."

The Sefer HaYashar before us is attributed to Rabbeinu Tam (as stated on the title page), though there are those who question this attribution. The Chida discusses the identity of the book’s author and presents two possibilities:

Rabbi Menachem di Lonzano argues that the author was Zerachiah the Greek.
Another view, cited in Seder HaDorot, suggests that the author was Rabbi Yehuda of Orléans, also one of the Ba’alei HaTosafot.
S. Halevi, Seferi Yerushalayim HaRishonim, no. 97.

48 leaves. Size: 16 cm.
