Panim Me'irot with a Beautiful Letter in the Handwriting of the Author, Rabbi Meir Yosef Kontin, Av Beit Din of Janowa

Panim Me’irot – novellae on the entire Talmud Yerushalmi, by Rabbi Meir Yosef Kotkin, Av Beit Din of Janowa. Warsaw, 1894. First edition. Two parts. With a letter from the author.

At the beginning of the book, a letter handwritten by the author is affixed, which he sent to the recipient of the book, detailing information about its distribution.

The recipient of the book signed his name in both parts and wrote that he received the book from the hands of the esteemed genius author, shlit”a.

Rabbi Meir Yosef Kotkin (born 1827), known as the Tzaddik of Janowa, was the author of Panim Me’irot on the Talmud Yerushalmi. He was the son and disciple of the righteous Gaon Rabbi Elazar Chaim, one of the greatest students of Rabbi Chaim of Volozhin. He was also a disciple of Rabbi Avraham Shmuel Aishishker, the author of Responsa Amudei Esh. At the age of fifteen, Rabbi Meir Yosef married Mrs. Meirka, the daughter of the wealthy Moshe Gandz of the city of Volkovysk. He served as Av Beit Din in the town of Rosia and the city of Brestovitz, and from there he moved to serve as Av Beit Din of Janowa (in the Kovno province, Lithuania) for approximately thirty years.

The author distributed the book free of charge to Torah scholars, as he had no male offspring.
