Interesting Letter from the Admo"r Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson of Lubavitch. With the Rebbe's Approach to the Agudat Yisrael Party
"May we soon merit the true, complete redemption by our righteous mashiach ..."
Lengthy, interesting letter. Typewritten on official stationery, with the addition of about three words, corrections and punctuation marks written in the holy hand of the Admo"r Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson of Lubavitch, and with his signature. Brooklyn, 1954. With the Rebbe's (lukewarm) approach the the "Agudat Yisrael" party.
The letter was sent to Rabbi Shlomo Yosef Zevin and opens with a halachic deliberation. The Rebbe later refers to the upcoming 'festival of redemption': "The days of redemption, the redemption of the leader, the head of the Jewish people ..." He goes on to refer to his book Moadim B'Halachah and also to HaEncyclopedia HaTalmudit. Amongst these matters there is an interesting comment about Agudat Yisrael's Kennesiah Gedolah, which Rabbi Zevin only participated in at the opening. The Rebbe writes: even if "he does not agree with all the details and activities of the party" it it worth his while to become a member of their Council of Torah Sages.
The Admo"r Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson [1902-1994] was the seventh in the dynasty of Admo"rs of Lubavitch. He began to serve as Admo"r in 1951 and continued until his passing. He was one of the most prominent Admo"rs of recent generations, a tremendous genius in all realms of Torah. He net was - and still is - cast across the entire world.
The gaon Rabbi Shlomo Yosef Zevin [1885-1978] was rabbinically ordained by the Rogachover gaon and by Rabbi Yechiel Michel Epstein. He served in the Russian rabbinate during the harsh period after the Communist Revolution, and was also actively involved in preserving the ember of religion in Soviet Russia, under the Admo"r of Lubavitch's leadership. He ascended to the Land of Israel in 1934. He was a member of the Chief Rabbinate of Israel, first editor of HaEncyclopedia HaTalmudit and first chairman of the Chaba"d rabbinical court in the Land of Israel.
