Historic Letter Regarding the Establishment of the State of Israel, From Chief Rabbi Yitzchak Isaac HaLevi Herzog

"With respect to the proposal of a Jewish state in the Land of Israel - from what I heard, this proposal is very uncertain from many angles"

Letter with huge historic import, entirely handwritten and signed by the first chief rabbi of the State of Israel, the gaon Rabbi Yitzchak Isaac HaLevi Herzog, about efforts being made behind the scenes to preserve the Jewish character of the State of Israel (tentatively) in the making. Jerusalem, 1937.

The letter is addressed to the honorable Mr. Meir David Lewenstein, a member of the People's Council and among the signatories on the declaration of independence, son of the chief rabbi of Zurich, Rabbi Tuvia Lewenstein. In his historic letter, the gaon Rabbi Yitzchak Isaac HaLevi Herzog attempts to wisely and gently bridge the huge gaps between different sectors of the Jewish people - religious, Chareidi and irreligious, and to present "at this time of the creation of the world, " a united approach before the League of Nations who would eventually deliberate the establishment of the State of Israel. Although the chance of establishing the state was not great in any case, according to Rabbi Herzog.

Refer to the Hebrew catalog text for brief biographies of Rabbi Yitzchak Isaac HaLevi Herzog and of the addressee, Meir David Lewenstein.
