The book is a reading book containing dozens of literary works to be read by the children.

In the book are combined

4 drawings + 8 folding drawing boards, one of them opens in an especially large way! A total of 12 paintings.

The drawings are great and were specially prepared for the book by the artist Gabriel Teshrani.

The book was written from the point of view of faith and godliness, which expresses the view of the author David Yelin, a native of the old Yisuv of Jerusalem.

At the end of the book was printed 'the list of uncommon words that appeared in this book' and a list of 'new words'. Some of these words were created or renewed by the author David Yelin, who was one of the leaders of the revival of the language, and a member of Eliezer Ben Yehuda's 'Hebrew Language Committee'. Here, in this book, is the first use of words that we use today.

Relatively very good condition. Minor tears in some of the opening panels. The paper is dry, as found in Warsaw prints from that period, (and this is also the condition of the other copies from the book). The original cover was pasted onto a hardcover, as usual.

Extremely rare! It is impossible to get a beautiful copy that has almost all the pages of the paintings intact, like the one in front of us!

About the author, David Yelin

In his youth, David Yelin studied in Cheder, Talmud Torah and Yeshiva Etz Haim, the largest and central Torah institution in Jerusalem. Along with studying the Gemara, he studied a lot of the Bible and even the Hebrew language, two subjects that were an official part of the curriculum of the ultra-orthodox institution. Between the walls of the school and the yeshiva, he acquired a rich and precise Hebrew style, and there the foundations were laid for his life's project: the revival of the Hebrew language.

In the year 1889 he began teaching Hebrew at the Lemel School in Jerusalem.

In 1888 Yelin was one of the founders of the Language Board, and headed it for many years. He was a central figure in the revival of the Hebrew language, and was very active in innovating words. Unlike Ben-Yehuda, who turned many times to the Arabic language in order to enrich the Hebrew language, Yelin advocated an independent innovation or one that relies on the ancient Hebrew sources. Yelin innovated many words, including words for photographer and photography, joke, farmer, lawn, compass, rare, indirect, locomotive, actor, date and propaganda [צלם וצילום, בדיחה, חקלאי, מדשאה, מצפן, נדיר, עקיף, קטר, שחקן, תאריך ותעמולה], and even innovated forgotten words, such as donut (doughnut), cricket and surprise [סופגנית (סופגנייה), צרצר והפתעה.].

At the same time as his teaching work, he also engaged in scientific, literary and public activities. He was involved in many areas in public affairs and held a wide variety of positions. He served as the head of the city council for the Jews of Jerusalem for more than two years. In the years 1920-1925 he was the Deputy Mayor of Jerusalem, and in 1920-1929 he was the President of the Assembly of Representatives and the head of the National Committee. He served at the Hebrew University as a professor of medieval Hebrew literature, and was also one of the founders of the Chief Rabbinate.

Yelin was a prolific writer and editor, and under his hands more than a hundred books were published.

הספר נכתב מנקודת מבט של אמונה ויראת שמים, המבטאת את השקפתו של המחבר דוד ילין, יליד הישוב הישן בירושלים.

בסוף הספר נדפסה 'רשימת המילים שאינן שגורות שבאו בספר הזה' ורשימת 'מילים או משקלים מחודשים'. חלק מהמילים האלו נוצרו או חודשו על ידי המחבר דוד ילין, שהיה מראשי תחיית השפה, וחבר 'ועד הלשון העברית' של אליעזר בן יהודה. כאן, בספר הזה, השימוש הראשון של מילים שכיום הננו משתמשים בהן.

מצב טוב מאוד יחסית. קרעים מינוריים בחלק מהלוחות הנפתחים. הנייר יבש, כמצוי בדפוסי ורשה מאותה תקופה, (וזהו גם מצבם של העותקים האחרים מהספר). העטיפה המקורית הודבקה על גבי כריכה קשה, כנהוג.

נדיר מאוד! אין בנמצא להשיג עותק יפה שקיימים בו כמעט כל דפי הציורים בשלמות, כמו זה שלפנינו!

על המחבר, דוד ילין

בצעירותו למד דוד ילין בחדר, בתלמוד תורה ובישיבת עץ חיים, מוסד התורה הגדול והמרכזי בירושלים. לצד לימודי הגמרא למד הרבה תנ"ך ואף את השפה העברית, שני מקצועות שהיו חלק רשמי בתוכנית הלימודים של המוסד החרדי. בין כותלי הת"ת והישיבה הוא רכש סגנון עברי עשיר ודייקני, ושם הונחו היסודות למיזם חייו: החייאת השפה העברית.

 בשנת תרמ"ט החל להורות עברית בבית הספר למל בירושלים.

בשנת תרמ"ח (1888) היה ילין ממייסדי ועד הלשון, ועמד בראשו שנים רבות. הוא היה אישיות מרכזית בהחייאת השפה העברית, והיה פעיל מאוד בחידוש מילים. שלא כבן-יהודה, שפנה פעמים רבות לשפה הערבית על מנת להעשיר את השפה העברית, דגל ילין בחידוש עצמאי או כזה המסתמך על המקורות העבריים העתיקים. ילין חידש מלים רבות, ובהן צלם וצילום, בדיחה, חקלאי, מדשאה, מצפן, נדיר, עקיף, קטר, שחקן, תאריך ותעמולה, ואף חידש מילים שנשכחו, כגון סופגנית (סופגנייה), אלה (להכאה), צרצר והפתיע.

במקביל לעבודתו בהוראה עסק גם בפעולות מדעיות, ספרותיות וציבוריות. הוא עסק בתחומים רבים כל כך בענייני ציבור ונשא במגוון רחב של תפקידים. הוא כיהן בראש ועד העיר ליהודי ירושלים יותר משנתיים. בשנים תר"ף–תרפ"ה היה סגן ראש עיריית ירושלים, ובתר"ף–תרפ"ט היה נשיא אספת הנבחרים וראש הוועד הלאומי. כיהן באוניברסיטה העברית כפרופסור לספרות העברית מימי הביניים, וכן היה ממייסדי הרבנות הראשית.

ילין היה סופר ועורך פורה, ומתחת ידיו יצאו לאור יותר ממאה ספרים.
