Rare. The Polemic against Chassidut. Mitzraf HaAvodah - with a letter by Ba'al Hatanya against HaGra - Zhytomyr, 1855.

One of the rarest books that were printed in Zhytomyr at the press of Rabbi Aryeh Leib Shapira, the grandson of the Rav of Slavuta.

Mitzraf HaAvodah, "which is a dispute that had lasted approx. eighty years between two Gedolei hador, one of the Chassidic community and the other of the Misnagdim community ... who fought over the field of the Nigleh and Nistar, over Yam HaTalmuf and the Poskim, and later reconciled. Added to it is a letter by the great Gaon ... Rabbi Shneur Zalman [of Liadi].."

The book was printed for the first time in Konigsberg in 1858. This is a copy of the second adn rare edition of the important book, which contains many variation compared to the first edition - and which was not reprinted until 2014.

The book deals with the nature of Chassidut, what it is and who are called Chassidim, what their customs are and more in a Shut format.

The author is the famed Chassid Rabbi Yaakov Bachrach of Kidan (also known as Yankel Kidaner), one of the Chassidimof the Mitteler Admor and after his passing, a Chassid of the Admor the Tzemach Tzedek.

In his youth, Rabbi Yaakov studied at the yeshiva of the Gaon Rabbi Chaim of Volozhin. He was attracted by the Chabad Chassidut and traveled to Lubavitch to follow the Mitteler Admor, a step that led to his family making his life miserable and to the writing of this book.

At the end of the book, "a sacred letter by the holy Rav of Liadi ... who responded to the Chassidim of Vilna", the letter by the Admor Hazaken Ba'al Hatanya - apparently the most imporatnt (Chassidic) letter in the history of the Chassidim-Misnagdim polemic.

In his letter, Ba'al Hatanya recalls his trup to Vilna and his attempt to argue with HaGra: .נקיים אנחנו מה' ומישראל ..והלכנו אל הגאון החסיד נ"י לביתו להתווכח עמו ולהסיר תלונותיו מעלינו... ובאמת אנו דנוהו לכף זכות להיות כי כבר נחלט הענין אצלו..

..וכ"ש שלא עלה על דעתו אולי יש אתם דבר ה' על פי אליהו ז"ל..

Later in the letter, Ba'al Hatanya refers to the depth of the dispute between HaGra and the Chassidim on the matter of "לית אתר פנוי מיניה כפשוטו ממש" - according to the Besht, "..ובעיני כבודו (הגר"א) הוא אפיקורסות גמורה לאמר שהוא ית' נמצא ממש בדברים שפלים ותחתונים ממש ולפי מכתב מעל' נשרף הספר הידוע...ומי יתן ..ואערכ' לפניו ..להסיר מעלינו כל טענותיו הפילוסופיות אשר הלך בעקבותיהם..וכאשר קבלתי מרבותי נ"ע תשובה ניצחת על כל דברים..."

Before the end of the letter, Ba'al Hatanya spaks strongly against the HaGra's authority on the Ari's Kabbalah (on the matter of Ha'ala'at Nitzotzot in Chassidic books): "..וידוע לנו בבירור גמור שהגאון החסיד נ"י אינו מאמין בקבלת האר"י ז"ל בכללה שהיא כולה מפי אליהו רק מעט מזעיר מפי אליהו והשאר מחכמתו הגדולה ואין חיוב להאמין בה וכו'...כל מי שיש מח בקדקדו יבין וישכיל שכל מי שאינו מאמין באיזה דבר לא אדון הוא בדבר זה לדון ולהכריע רק המכריעים יהיו גדולי ישראל המפורסמים באמונת קבלת האר"י ז"ל בכללה ..כחכמי הספרדים ודומיהם..."

The letter ends with a directive to all Chassidim pertaining to the burning of books: ..לא לכם לריב את ריב הבעש"ט זצללה"ה ולעורר מדנים לא זו הדרך.. ובעיניכם זה דבר חדש אך כבר היה לעולמים ..מי גדול ממשה בדורו ה"ה הרמב"ם..ושרפו ספריו...אך כאשר חלפו ועברו ימים רבים..ותצמח אמת מארץ וידעו כל ישראל כי משה אמת וכו' וכה יהיה לנו מהרה בימינו"
