Letter from Rabbi Shmuel Salant of Jerusalem. [1870]?
Request from Rabbi Shmuel Salant for help securing the release of a Rabbi imprisoned in Jerusalem. [1870]. His signature and stamp.
[1] leaf. 27x21 cm.
The letter was written to R' Yaakov Dembrowsky of Irkutsk and asks for his help in releasing Rabbi Shamul Binyamin HaKohen from a Jerusalem jail. [1870].
Rabbi Shaul Binyamin HaKohen, rabbi of Radoshkovich immigrated to Jerusalem in 1858. He worked to expand the Talmud Torah and Yeshiva in Jerusalem and borrowed large amounts of money to this end. It seems that his debts eventually caused his imprisonment, and the Rabbi of Jerusalem tried to secure his release. Refer to: Shnot Dor, 2008, p. 224.
Rabbi Shmuel Salant (1816-1909) served as Rabbi of Jerusalem for seventy years. He was a noted halachic posek and genius. His writings were recently published in three volumes by his descendants, the Tikutinsky family of Yeshivat Eitz Chaim.
Historic, important letter.
